The best upcoming horror movies

The Ranger

Release date: TBA
The directorial debut of seasoned horror producer Jenn Wexler, The Ranger looks like a zesty, energised hoot of a thing. Following the story of a group of teen punks on the run from the police after a drug deal gone bad, it inevitably ends up in a cabin in the woods, in a national park patrolled by the eponymous Ranger. Bringing fizzing, punk rock energy and a revitalising splash of colour to the slasher genre, The Ranger looks to mix an '80s setting and seemingly retro tropes with a distinctly modern wit. The early sense of fun is infectious, so hopefully the final movie will follow suit.

The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot

Release date: TBA
AKA, There is literally no fricking way we were not going to include it with a title like that. The plot? Decades after secretly assassinating Hitler to end World War 2 - suffering great personal loss in the process - undercover hero Calvin Barr (Sam Elliott) is sent on a new mission. Bigfoot is wandering the Canadian wilderness, carrying a plague with the potential to end mankind. Clearly, Bigfoot must die. A brilliantly goofy-sounding supernatural adventure, both the alternate history concept and charismatic casting of TMWKHATTB put us distinctly in mind of fantastic 'Bruce Campbell as aged Elvis' movie Bubba Ho-Tep, and that can be no bad thing. No bad thing whatsoever.

Terrified

Release date: TBA
A paranormal horror from Argentina, Terrified sounds as unsettling as it does disturbingly weird. This is a combination we are always 100% down for. A woman hides outside her bathroom, cowering from something in the pipes threatening to kill her. Then things get really messy, as the whole neighbourhood explodes into widespread, paranormal horror. Enter a cop and two ageing paranormal investigators, out of their depth but tasked with finding answers. Along the way they'll find ghosts, possible zombies, and who knows what else. Either way, it looks both gory and quietly atmospheric, which is of course another very good combination.

The Dark

Release date: TBA
Sounding like it could well be a successor to Let the Right One in, The Dark is an intriguing tale of both horror and innocence, centred around the burgeoning friendship between a flesh-eating ghoul girl and the abused boy she happens upon, and then allows to live. It's an enticing overall concept, with scope for a ton of interesting, emotional, and existential layers on top of the horror. If the execution follows through, The Dark could turn out to be the kind of film that events like FrightFest are made to showcase.

The Little Stranger

Release date: August 31, 2018 (US)/September 21, 2018 (UK)
Sometimes, you just need to get back to basics. Tradition. The good old classic comfort zones. Sometimes you just need a big country house full of posh British people all being terribly polite and repressed about a clear case of eldritch, seething horror that no-one wants to acknowledge because doing so just wouldn't be the done thing at all. Must be delusions. Damn stress of the war. Ghosts? Barmy.
