5 Most Fascinating Bridges in India

1. Pamban Bridge, Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu

Pamban Sea Bridge was opened to public in 1914 and was India’s first sea bridge that connected southern Rameswaram town on Pamban Island to Palk Strait. The bridge spans a 2 km-strait between mainland and island and is the only surface transport link between the two. 
It is also India’s first Cantilever bridge and there were many challenges while constructing it, such as it was built in world’s second highly corrosive environment, first one being Mexico. 
The Pamban bridge was the only link between Rameswaram and the mainland until 1988 when a road bridge, running parallel to it, was built. Earlier, it used to transport hundreds of pilgrims everyday to the temple in the island.
The railways decided to close down the metre gauge rail as part of its gauge conversion plans. In fact, the railways had proposed to make it this line a unigauge, but then President A P J Abdul Kalam suggested that it be strengthened and converted into a broad gauge rail.

2. Dhola Sadia Bridge, Assam


Dhola Sadiya Bridge on Lohit river is the longest road bridge in India, located on the Brahmaputra river in Assam connect the states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The 9.15 kilometres long road bridge will be inaugurated by Hon’ble prime minister of India Shri Narendra Modi on 26th May 2017.


3. Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Mumbai, Maharashtra



The Famous Bandra-Worli sea link is also known by the name Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link. It is a cable bridge that connects Bandra in the west of Mumbai to Worli which is in the southern part of the city.

This bridge has helped in saving a lot of time for the passengers who travel from Bandra to Worli and vice versa. The bridge has concrete steel viaducts on either of its sides which strengths its base. This bridge in Mumbai is a perfect example of the brilliant engineering works done by the authorities.
The 5.6 km bridge does, as a matter of fact reduce commutation time between Worli, and the Suburbs of Bandra from 60-90 minutes to under 10 minutes.
One of the coolest facts about Mumbai’s much loved bridge is the fact that its weight is equal to the weight of 56,000 African Elephants put together, after all, 90,000 ton of cement was used to build this beauty.

4. Howrah Bridge, Kolkata, West Bengal



The Howrah Bridge is located between the twin cities of Howrah and Kolkata in West Bengal, India. The 705m long and 30m wide bridge was built in 1943 over the Hooghly River.
It was rechristened as Rabindra Setu in June 1965, after the first Indian Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The bridge is commonly called Howrah Bridge.

The Howrah Bridge is a suspension type balanced cantilever bridge. It has a central span of 1500ft between the main towers. The anchor and cantilever arms are 325ft and 468ft long respectively.

5. Godavari Arch Bridge, Rajahmundhry, Andhra Pradesh



Opened in 1997, Godavari Arch Bridge is an engineering marvel. The bridge is the longest arch bridge in Asia which is constructed using prestressed concrete. It runs over the Godavari river and is located in the city of Rajahmundry.
The bridge is a railroad bridge and is spread across an area of 320 feet. Being situated in a cyclonic area, it has been designed to withstand cyclonic storms.
